It’s time to see the light.
We’re in a pivotal time in our history. It’s time to expose hard truths and work towards a brighter future.
Nationwide, 1 in 28 children has an incarcerated parent. 1 in 9 is African American due to racial inequities.
Have you been kept in the dark?
The school-to-prison pipeline is real and disparately affects the African American community.· Black youth in Allegheny County are arrested six times (6x) more and detained three times (3x) more than white youth for similar offenses.
Nationally, African American males are incarcerated at six times (6x) the rate of white males. In Pennsylvania, the rate is nine times (9x) and in Allegheny County, the rate is an astonishing twelve times(12x).
> African Americans serve virtually as much time in prison for a non-violent drug offense (58.7 months) as whites do for a violent offense (61.7 months). (Sentencing Project)
> 5 times as many Whites are using drugs as African Americans, yet African Americans are sent to prison for drug offenses at 10 times the rate of Whites
> According to Unlocking America, if African Americans and Hispanics were incarcerated at the same rate as whites, today's prison and jail populations would decline by approximately 50%.
> Despite these racial disparities, dismal rates of philanthropic dollars go to communities of color (1.4% to black-led orgs)
