Allies for Greyhounds places retired racing greyhounds into loving forever homes.
The Covid-19 pandemic has hit greyhound adoption groups such as ours in multiple ways. First, with states issuing stay-at-home orders, our volunteers have not been able to hold their regularly scheduled meet & greet events. These are our main outlet to the public to inform people of the breed, talk to them about adoption, and provides a key source of donations. Secondly, we have not been able to do any adoptions since the orders went into effect. Our adoption fee serves to cover the cost of the vetting of a hound, food, heart worm preventative, collars, leashes, and so forth. Thirdly, out of safety for our adoptive families, we have been forced to cancel our annual Spring Fling picnic. That event was our largest annual source of fundraising for our group. All these thing combined have had major impact on our group's finances.
If these issues weren't bad enough, Covid-19 has caused some of the race tracks in Florida to close earlier than expected. While adoption groups have been coordinating with the tracks for a controlled phaseout, these early closures mean hounds will be heading to retirement earlier than anticipated. That means more hounds to vet, more mouths to feed, and more supply costs. When our kennel was getting low on food our volunteers stepped up and donated food in overwhelming numbers. We are ever thankful for their help, but we know our adoptive families are strained during this difficult time as well, and we hope to raise funds through other means. Until we are able to resume normal adoptions and events we will continue to go without our main sources of income to provide care for the hounds. Any contribution you are willing to make to our group is appreciated. We are all eager to get back out in the public and talk with people about why these hounds are so awesome. With your donation that will help sustain our kennel until our lives return to normal.
