Alex Renteria would have turned eighteen this year. He would have finished high school and earned a college acceptance letter. And his family would have been watching him graduate next month. But only a few weeks into the summer vacation before his junior year, Alex passed away.
Like any true Yeti, Alex loved his family, his friends, and his teachers. And because he was a lively and friendly student, his team loved him deeply, too. Losing him was one of the toughest moments in the story of our Class of 2020 and honoring his birthdays with performances and memories has become a special tradition in our common space.
Before graduating, the Class of 2020 and Equipo staff would like to leave a permanent remembrance of Alex on our campus. We plan to plant a special evergreen tree by the Equipo Academy soccer field with a bench and stone in memory of Alex for his graduation day. A mature, Japanese Blueberry Tree has been located and we hope to meet our fundraising goal in time to run irrigation, install the box tree, and complete landscaping before graduation on June 14.
Because "Impossible is not." we plan to proceed with whatever we are able to raise. As soon as we meet our goal, we are ready to immediately start on the project. If we exceed our goal, we will use any additional funds to incorporate Alex's love of guitar, friends, and family into the space that we create for him.
We thank you for your support of our project and for your help in remembering a special member of our Class of 2020 team and family.
