"It's not about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward."
~ Rocky Balboa.
Dear Friends & Community,
For the last nine months, the Philadelphia Film Society has been teetering on the precipice of uncertainty — having to identify and sustain new ways of generating up to 70% of its annual operating budget: A budget that just last year was achieved through sales from film screenings, memberships, concessions, and film-related programs and events. And while it has been difficult — to say the least — each month we have been able to meet the challenge of sustaining operations through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Key to our success to date were 11 days this past July, when we called upon the Community to help 'Save Our Screens’ through a GoFundMe Campaign that helped underpin the Film Society’s financial position through the end of the year. With your support, the Film Society has been able to not just 'keep its doors open,’ it has been able to innovate new ways of keeping our community connected to one another, and to its love for film. At the top of this innovative list of new programs are the PFS Drive-In at the Navy Yard, the Virtual Theater, a summer series of free community screenings, and the City’s first hybrid presentation of the 29th Philadelphia Film Festival — offered both through the Drive-in at the Navy Yard and our state-of-the-art streaming service, CineSend.
Thanks to you, we made it through to the end of the year. But we urgently need your help again! Our theaters remain closed, our programs and services remain at risk, and several months still remain between now and the re-opening of our theaters.
That is why we have again established a GoFundMe Campaign through which we need to raise an additional $30,000 by next Sunday, December 20. Named in honor of one of the world's most beloved film characters, Rocky Balboa, who said "It’s not about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward,” this campaign is designed to help the Film Society 'move forward' through these next several months and into what will be our milestone 20th Anniversary year.
The Forward Fund will also provide the necessary resources to sustain the new and innovative programming - and ways of delivering that programming - that have been put in place during the pandemic. And when you make a gift to The Forward Fund, you’ll be providing critical funding to not just help the Film Society make it to its 20th Anniversary, you’ll also be helping to ensure that the Film Society is here to produce and celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Philadelphia Film Festival in October of 2021.
We are close to the finish line, but we need your help to ensure the Film Society can make it through the COVID-19 pandemic and into 2021 to celebrate two milestone anniversaries and to continue to ‘move forward’ in its efforts to connect Philadelphians with film and film-related programs that inspire, educate, challenge and entertain.
We wish you a happy, healthy and safe holiday season and look forward to eventually, safely, seeing you at the movies.
With gratitude,The Staff and Board ofThe Philadelphia Film Society
