GIVING THE GIFT OF PLAY TO CHILDREN IN UNDERSERVED NEIGHBORHOODS
Alexandra’s Playground has entered this “A Community Thrives Challenge” in order to donate a playground to New Jersey’s Paterson Public Schools, in spring 2019, so that the children in this low-income urban environment have a safe place to play both during and after school.
: Build a playground for the Paterson Public Schools
It’s hard to believe, but so many elementary schools here do not have playgrounds for their students. And these same neighborhoods are even lacking after school access to safe and active play. We will work with the school district to select a site, and then with the school principal to determine the play features they want their students to experience. We plan to build a playground manufactured by Kompan.
The majority of the playground will be built in one day by volunteers from the Paterson community, with additional help from Alexandra’s Playground volunteers, all under the supervision of professional installers. In this very densely populated community, 81% of the enrolled students live in economically disadvantaged homes. They are a diverse group of students, representing 52 ethnic groups and together speaking 34 languages.
: We want all of the children in this community to experience the joy of safe and active play. Children who regularly engage in active play grow up more physically, emotionally & cognitively healthy. But opportunities for safe, active play are increasingly threatened. Today’s children spend less time playing outside than any previous generation. We have already donated and built 4 playgrounds for Paterson Public Schools, and hope to continue building more. We are a friends and family supported nonprofit, happy to be expanding our reach thanks to our growing base of friends like you.
: With your help, we must raise a minimum of $3,000 on this Crowdrise campaign page in order to be considered, and only donations $10 - $10,000 will count. There is even a bonus grant for the campaign which raises the most money here.
: Alexandra’s Playground is committed to providing underserved children access to safe and active play. Established in 2009 to commemorate the life of the founders’ young daughter, Alexandra Vitale, the organization is dedicated to positively impacting the world as they know she would have. Alexandra’s Playground is committed to creating safe environments for children to strengthen their bodies and minds through imaginative play and interaction with other children.
We bring the Gift of Play into the daily lives of thousands of children each year by donating playgrounds and sponsoring programs. With a focus on the NY-NJ-CT tri-state area, we have built more than twenty playgrounds across the country, and in Haiti. An Alexandra’s Playground typically culminates in a community build, bringing families and neighborhoods together.
Alexandra’s Playground is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Irvington, New York.
: We are competing for grants of $100,000, $50,000, $25,000, $15,000 or $10,000. As per the contest rules, all funds raised on this Crowdrise page will be used towards operating expenses, including building playgrounds, providing programs, and support to continue our mission of Giving the Gift of Play.
