The 9/11 Promise Run & Ride, established in 2016, is an event that is held to keep a promise that was made in 2001 when our country, the United States of America, was attacked. Many lives were lost, and we continue to deal with the aftermath. This event remembers the lives lost, and honors emergency personnel who on a daily basis respond with the greatest of courage, and our military who continue to fight for this country’s safety and freedom, here and abroad. The 9/11 Promise Run & Ride is not a race – but an event that is held for a bigger cause. There is no winner – or second place or third place.
In 2016, a team of seven runners from different backgrounds came together and ran from the Pentagon to Ground Zero while raising over $23K all of which went to charity. During this run, they connected and formed friendships with local fire departments, police departments and community members. They remembered, and they honored.
Each year, this event has grown in size and in fundraising totals. More individuals have signed up for the journey; more firehouses, police departments and community members have also gotten involved. To date, the event has raised over $230K all of which has gone to charity!
In 2018, the 9/11 Promise Run, Inc. became an established 501(c)(3) non-profit organization! As a non-profit, our fundraising mission is to provide scholarships to qualified children of first responders and military service members who have been killed or injured and are unable to hold employment.
2020 has brought some challenges in making the in-person, three-day event possible. While we cannot be together as a group this year to support the mission, we do have an opportunity to touch more lives and get more folks involved. How you may ask? We want you to grab your friends, families and coworkers! We are making this a virtual event accessible and attainable for everyone! COVID has taught us a lot, and one thing it has taught us is the absolute need for each other. So, we are going to capitalize on that lesson! Between September 9th and September 11th, we are asking that either individually or with a relay team of your choosing, you run and/or bike 9.11 miles. We'd greatly appreciate you taking selfies and pictures, adding our hashtags and posting on social media. We highly encourage you to carry a flag on your run or bike! Maybe even stop at a firehouse, police department or military base and thank them for all that they do! If you are in an area where there is a 9/11 memorial of any kind, take a visit and honor those lives lost.
There is absolutely NO registration fee because we want everyone to participate! We are also not making fundraising mandatory; however, we are setting an overall goal of fundraising because we want to be able to give out a few more scholarships next spring. Our overall goal is $25,000 and we feel confident that we can hit this mark! In order to fundraise, please register and have your donors donate through your individual link. We will be posting videos throughout the three days on social media. We also plan to have an auction or 50/50 raffle with some nice items! As you know, the September event is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We are dedicated to using 100% of donations raised by athletes for the scholarships that go to children of fallen and/or injured First Responders & Military Service members. In May 2020, we awarded 10 amazing kids with scholarships! We want to do that again in 2021!
As an incentive, anyone who raises $1,000 or more will receive a free registration for the 2021 event. We are already hard at work planning the 2021 event because it will be the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, and we plan to go big! You will not want to miss out next year!
We honor the fallen and injured Heroes while we lift up their children! @911promiserun #childrenofheroes #dctonyc #dctoshanksvile
