Many zoo visitors don’t realize the amount of important conservation work and animal care that is done by zoos because it largely happens behind the scenes. The Akron Zoo makes protection, education, and conservation our top priorities. But we cannot do it alone. Summer Safari, the zoo's largest annual fundraiser, provides the zoo with much needed support that allows our veterinarian staff and keepers to provide care well beyond standard dietary and wellness requirements.
Some examples of the excellent care our supporters allow us to provide are: restoring vision for Ana, a golden lion tamarin with cataracts; saving Zippy, a rosybill porchard duck who ingested a metal zipper; performing a root canal on Chack, a male jaguar with a chipped tooth; and designing a custom made ultrasound box for snow leopard, Shanti, when she was pregnant. Summer Safari has helped the zoo make great strides toward wildlife and habitat conservation.
While Summer Safari provides funds for us to continue our important conservation work, it's also a great time for our guests to experience the zoo in an unique way. Guests will enjoy an adventurous evening filled with fun, delicious food and drinks, an auction, exotic animals and more - all beneath a beautiful summer sky.
