Phill and Aida “officially” met at Camp New Directions as camp counselors. Both volunteered for 5 year as counselors and Aida worked as camp staff for an additional 2 years. It is very special to both of them. It is an amazing summer camp for kids 9-11 years old. This camp is free to them. Camp New Directions is a unique summer camp in that these kids who attend have poor social skills, behavior problems, and/or mental health issues. Many are or have been involved in the foster care system or the juvenile justice system. Camp focuses on strengthing resiliency and enhancing self-esteem for these youth. Many often are unable to attend other summer camps due to financial or behavioral challenges. They attend this camp for a week and for most of them, it’s the only time they can “be a kid”. The camp is funded by donations which is why Phill and Aida are asking anyone who wants to buy them a gift to instead donate to Camp New Directions. They love this camp so much and want to make sure it keeps going year after year.
