The number of refugees leaving Turkey and crossing by boat the the nearby Greek islands has increased dramatically in recent weeks. As of today, September 23, 2019, there have been 7,625 new arrivals on the islands, and the refugee population on the islands is now 28,776. Keep in mind that over 14,000 people were stopped and turned back by the Turkish Coast Guard, so the desire to leave Turkey and get to Greece is very high among the refugees in Turkey right now.
SCM is helping the refugees in Greece and we are planning a medical clinic and offering other assistance such as translation services at a hospital on Samos and shelter for them while they wait to be moved to the mainland. We want to have this fund be for general Greece projects as the numbers continue to grow on the three major islands where there refugees are arriving: Lesbos, Chios, and Samos.
