College Funds for the Children of Astoria Houses
Support College Funds for Kindergarten, First, Second and Third Graders in Astoria Houses
**Campaign Update (January 7, 2021)**
We are thrilled to officially share the wonderful news that we have reached the initial goal of raising $1000 for every first, second and third grade child living in Astoria Houses with a NYC Scholarship Account. This is a huge accomplishment and we are very grateful. There is no way this would have been possible without your generous support. Thank you for showing up for the children of Astoria Houses!
Timing can be divine and as our Campaign has worked out, we have met our initial goal just as the new class of students in our community have received their NYC Scholarship Accounts! There are 50 additional students - mostly kindergartners - who as of January 1st now have their accounts. In the spirit of including this group in our celebration, we have decided to extend our campaign efforts to raise an additional $50,000 so each of these children will also receive $1,000. We feel this is possible in large part thanks to the College Opportunity Fund who has already committed $25,000 towards this effort! Our challenge is now to raise an additional $25,000 before our community celebration on Feb 6th. Thank you for any additional support you may be able to provide, and please spread the word.

My name is Claudia Coger and I'm the President of the Astoria Houses Tenants Organization.
Our children are incredible.
We want every single one of them to know that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Education opens doors to tremendous opportunity. Our youngest need to know that they have a whole community behind them cheering them on.
Three years ago, the Astoria Houses community and communities throughout Western Queens partnered on an initiative that opens and funds universal college savings accounts for every child in public school when they enter kindergarten. Now, nearly every first-grader, second-grader and third-grader living in Astoria Houses already has an NYC Scholarship Account with money set aside for their college and career education. So far, a total of more than $21,000 has been deposited into the accounts of these 134 students.
We want this number to be higher.
We have set an initial goal to raise $134,000--enough to deposit another $1,000 into each of these young students’ accounts. This is not only a real financial foundation that our children can rely on in 10+ years when they graduate from high school and set off on their career path. It is also sending them a message TODAY that their community believes in them and knows they can succeed. With all the fear and pain our children are living through right now, that message is in some ways more important than ever.
Your donation will go to NYC Kids RISE, which will distribute ALL monies raised directly to the NYC Scholarship Accounts of participants in the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program that live in Astoria Houses (according to their home address on file with the NYC Department of Education). All contributions to NYC Kids RISE are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by applicable law. Contributions can be made via the donate button or by making a check payable to NYC Kids RISE and mailing it to:
