This year will mark AHBL’s 11th year supporting Food Lifeline’s Food Frenzy initiative, which seeks to eliminated hunger in our communities. Many have joined us in this effort, pledging your time and money over the years and uplifting those in need in the process. Our yearly participation in this community event is something of which we can all be proud.
But of course, 2020 is far from a normal year and, more than ever, food insecurity threatens far too many in our home state. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington saw the need for food assistance double from about 850,000 people in a typical month to 1.6 million people as a result of the economic hardship caused by the pandemic. And this number is forecasted to grow with the number of food-insecure people reaching more than 2 million people before the crisis begins to subside.
With fall right around the corner and increased demand on food pantries with it, our involvement in Food Frenzy critical. Together, we can help get nutritious food into the communities that need it most, relieving some of the financial burden and stress faced by many families this time of year as well as supporting those through the economic hardship brought on by COVID-19.
In years past, we have volunteered our time to sort donations, held games and fundraisers with our peers, and attended industry events in support of this larger goal. But again, this year looks different. Instead, we are calling on you to consider making a monetary contribution to fight hunger is Washington State. No games, no events – just an appeal to those who can to help those whose next meal is uncertain.
Thank you to all who have supported Food Frenzy in the past and to those who choose to do so this year. The cumulative impact of even a small gift is incredible and we hope to continue this effort until hunger is a thing of the past.
