Growing up, Afroz Shah often played on Mumbai’s Versova Beach. But when he moved to the area in 2015, he was upset to see the sand covered by more than five feet of plastic waste and other garbage. He started cleaning it up himself and since then more than 200,000 volunteers have joined his effort. Today, Afroz, who works as a lawyer, spends every weekend working to reduce plastic pollution and clean waterways. To date, his movement has collected more than 60 million pounds of garbage and his Afroz Shah Foundation intends to expand his mission across the globe.
