WHY ARE ANIMALS BEING POISONED IN AFRICA? Currently in Africa, poisons and pesticides are illegally being used to kill wildlife species such as lions, elephants, hippos, and buffalo, which are perceived as a threat to livestock and property. Pesticides are used to intentionally kill African wildlife because they are cheap, lethal, and readily available. Poisoned fruit or meat is left out as bait for unsuspecting animals to consume causing them to suffer a deliberate and agonizing death. To make matters worse, scavenger species which naturally depend on the carcasses of animals for survival are also poisoned, resulting in the death of hundreds of non-targeted animals.
HOW WE ARE SAVING AFRICAN WILDLIFE: Unfortunately, due to lack of funding and insufficient technology to identify pesticides in potential cases, poaching events occurring in these African nations are going unchecked. Our solution: We work with local experts and conservation organizations on the ground in Africa responding poisoning events. Our collaborative partners include Great Plains Conservation, Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, WD4C and CARACAL. Through a combination of educational outreach and strategic response, we are providing the tools, information, and training necessary to safely collect samples from possible poisoning events and ship them to our laboratory in Philadelphia, PA to perform free toxicology testing. Results we provide are being used to prosecute individuals engaging in this illegal practice helping to deter future poisoning events.
HOW WILL THIS CAMPAIGN HELP THE CAUSE? Our goal is to support our partners in Africa through long-term forensic investigations. This includes expanding our collaborative partnership to additional field response teams. We will train and support response teams and provide actionable data pertaining to the substances collected from wildlife crime scenes. This info collected will aid in criminal investigations, identify possible geographic links or patterns and determine the source or manufacturer of these poisons to deter future poisonings and mitigate the profound impact caused by this growing form of illegal poaching.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP: Every cent of your donation will be used for training, sample collection, international shipping, laboratory instrumentation/supplies, and data analysis.
HOW WILL YOUR DONATION BE USED?
· Train collaborators in Africa including law enforcement, veterinarians, and conservationists to properly document, collect, and preserve samples via our field-friendly sample processing method
· Assemble and develop “Field Kits” including protective safety gear including masks, gloves, goggles, and coveralls in order to protect field workers while collecting samples
· Cover the cost of all international shipping fees · Purchase necessary lab supplies for sample testing and analysis while maintaining requirements for legal submission of results to confirm wildlife poisonings
· Outreach to additional conservation organizations to increase our network of collaborators
JOIN OUR POISONING RESPONSE TEAM! 100% of your donation brings justice to poisoned African wildlife and will help end this growing threat. You will receive a certificate with GPS coordinates and photos from a suspected poisoning incident in Africa in which your donation insured that samples were collected, identified and tested allowing for consistent comprehensive data on which to base policy and procedure. Donations of all amounts are appreciated and are tax deductible. Please help by supporting and sharing this important cause. We thank you on behalf of our laboratory staff and our conservation partners in Africa.
