As part of Elevate Energy's commitment to equity and the people we serve, we are donating funds to purchase and install energy efficient window AC units to keep Chicago's most vulnerable seniors safe this summer.
We need your help to raise an additional $10,000 to expand our reach. Your support would enable us to purchase, deliver, and install air conditioning units for at least 20 seniors.
Almost exactly 25 years ago, Chicago’s deadliest heat wave killed 739 people over five days in July. Most were low-income, elderly, and people of color residing on Chicago’s South and West sides.
Today, we're in the midst of another hot summer, with the added complication of a pandemic that's also particularly lethal to seniors and people of color. Older adults may be afraid to gather at dedicated cooling centers due to COVID-19. And given social distancing requirements, the centers won't be able to admit as many people.
Elevate Energy works with low-income seniors to repair and upgrade their homes so they can remain there safely and affordably. Many of them do not have a way to stay cool during the summer. A window air-conditioning unit in a bedroom or living room could save lives.
