Jim Mellin will be running along side Ret. United States Army Master Sgt. Cedric King in the NYC Marathon on November 3rd!
Master Sgt. Cedric King:
On July 25, 2012, during his third deployment, Cedric’s platoon conducted a reconnaissance of a possible explosives distributor in an Afghan village. As they approached the target, they fell under machine gun fire. Once the firefight ended, Cedric proceeded forward, only to step on a pressure plate improvised explosive device (IED). The blast lifted him from his feet. He awoke eight days later in the United States to find his mother and wife at his bedside. In addition to many catastrophic injuries, Cedric had lost both of his legs. While recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Cedric met the *Achilles Freedom Team. Just months after injury, he participated in a long-distance race with the group and has been hooked ever since. In addition to being a doting husband and father, he is now a world-class motivational speaker and endurance athlete. Becoming a double amputee could have been his breaking point. Instead, he turned it into his making point. With an extraordinary amount of determination and unbreakable spirit, Cedric not only adapts to, but embraces his new normal with true grit and class. He is a shining example of making the most out of life.
Cedric and AXA:
At our last National Management Conference in February, the AXA field management got to meet Cedric, who was our keynote speaker. They also got to participate in a 5K with Cedric, called the Master Sgt. Cedric King 5K (MSCK5K). Cedric was so motivating, and had such an amazing impact on everyone there. Jim Mellin will be running the marathon with Cedric as one of his aids via the Achilles Freedom Team.
Cedric is extremely grateful and humbled by the support he has received since being wounded and when asked, requested that anyone who wants to pay it forward, please donate to the Achilles Freedom Team. Running the NYC Marathon together will be filled with many emotions, challenges and hopefully some fun for these two men. They will take on 26.2 miles together step by step - and they are grateful for all of your support along the way!
In 2004, Achilles International launched the Achilles Freedom Team. At that time, service men and women were coming home with catastrophic injuries leaving them with permanent disabling conditions. Achilles was there to help. Since its inception, the Achilles Freedom Team has worked closely with personnel at military hospitals and VA facilities to introduce the program to America’s heroes as they begin to navigate life with a disability. This population is uniquely goal oriented, physically driven and mentally strong. They are conditioned to perform at the highest level, and, because of this, it is a natural step for them to set their sights on participating in a mainstream road race. It is also natural for veterans to want to be part of a group. A team. As their new medical conditions may force them to change the trajectory of their lives as a soldier, marine, airman etc – the Achilles Freedom Team reminds them that it does not have to change their lives as an athlete or as a teammate. They signed up to be on the front lines for us; Achilles will be at the finish line for them.
