On November 3rd, I will be running the New York City marathon thanks to the help of Achilles International. This is a great organization that enables athletes with any type of disability to participate in athletic events and achieve goals that otherwise would seem overwhelming or impossible.
I was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia in 2018 and underwent brain surgery this past July.
Michael Anderson, the coach of the Achilles New York City branch, has provided me with support, encouragement and training. I was assigned an accomplished athlete, and selfless volunteer, Kristen Kastrinos, as a Guide to stay with me through my journey. Together we will conquer this 26.2 mile run through New York City. Please consider making a donation to Achilles International and sharing this page with your family and friends!
About Achilles International: OUR MISSION IS TO EMPOWER PEOPLE WITH ALL TYPES OF DISABILITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN MAINSTREAM ATHLETICS IN ORDER TO PROMOTE PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT, ENHANCE SELF ESTEEM, AND LOWER BARRIERS TO LIVING A FULFILLING LIFE. ACHILLES HAS SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND VETERANS. ACHILLES KIDS PROVIDES TRAINING, RACING OPPORTUNITIES, AND AN IN-SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES, WHILE THE FREEDOM TEAM BRINGS RUNNING PROGRAM AND MARATHON OPPORTUNITIES TO OUR WOUNDED, INJURED AND ILL VETERANS.
When you watch the NYC Marathon and see athletes using their arms to propel pushrim or hand-crank wheelchairs through the course, those are Achilles athletes. The people running with a tether between them? Those are visually impaired or blind Achilles athletes. Amputees, people with Multiple Sclerosis or Cerebral Palsy, those recovering from organ transplants, or living with diabetes -- all are Achilles athletes. While Achilles programs focus on athletics, the truth is, sports are simply the tool for accomplishing the main objective: to bring hope, inspiration and the joys of achievement to people with disabilities. Achilles has more than 90 chapters in over 40 countries worldwide. Your contribution helps us continue this important work.
