Qudsiya started running when she was 11 years old. It began with a short half mile a few days a week around her parents’ neighborhood, and grew into a lifelong commitment and passion. She ran her first marathon in Philadelphia in 2008 during her second year of law school. It was the first race she had ever participated in, and she knew it wouldn’t be the last. She went on to run the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC in 2010, and though she continued racing, she took a break from marathons for a few years, focusing on shorter races. Now, she is making a comeback in NYC. Qudsiya attended Barnard College, and has always considered New York home-the place where she came of age, found her independence, and experienced so many firsts in life. She is thrilled at the prospect of realizing a decades-long dream to run the New York City Marathon.
Qudsiya was born with a degenerative retinal condition, and lost a good deal of her vision in her mid-20s. She joined Achilles in 2017, after the Washington DC chapter was revived. With her Achilles guides, she has never missed a step, and continues her commitment to long-distance running. Through this incredible organization, she has also built long lasting friendships, like the one that she shares with Nina.
Nina and Qudsiya net through the Washington DC Achilles chapter, and became fast friends. As a news junkie, Qudsiya was fascinated by Nina‘s career as a journalist, and they have shared many miles together full of stories about news, politics, and life. Nina started running while living in Brussels eleven years ago, and has been running ever since. She has done three marathons since moving to the U.S. and several half-marathons, but had always run alone before joining Achilles DC. For Nina, it’s deeply motivating to be running as part of a group, and lending her eyes to visually impaired runners has been a revelation in itself: Qudsiya and the other Achilles athletes have been inclusive, warm and welcoming, and give Nina a reason to run more than she otherwise would. Nina is very excited to be running the NYC marathon with Qudsiya, and they both really want to give back to Achilles DC through helping to raise much needed funds for athletes to participate in races. Achilles DC meets three times a week for runs and workouts, and welcomes runners of all levels. We believe running is for everyone, and help partner guides with runners. Thank you so much for your support and for helping to raise funds for Achilles DC! See you in NYC!
