Last year, my family and I began volunteering with the Mongolia Chapter of Achilles International, a non-profit founded in New York with members in over 65 locations in the United States and abroad. Through Achilles, we get to support people with disabilities in building personal achievement and community through physical fitness. Whether training for the marathon series, participating in the weekend hiking groups, or advising with other volunteers, we’ve seen firsthand the transformative work and dedication of the Achilles team in Mongolia.
With this campaign, we aim to sponsor Mongolia’s leading athletes with disabilities to compete in the New York City Marathon on November 4th, 2018. Nomin and I are training each to guide an athlete from Mongolia—Zoro, a double amputee, and Tunga, a deaf athlete—in what is set to become the largest and most diverse team of athletes and volunteers (including Agi!) to participate in the NYC Marathon since the Mongolia Chapter’s founding in 2014.
In truth, this campaign is about more than running the NYC marathon – it’s about helping Achilles International Mongolia to take its services to the next level and empower even more people with disabilities to realize their fullest potential.
Thanks everyone for your support – Be well!
Jon, Agi, and Nomin Lyons

Athletes & Guides
Zoro & Jon
Zoro is truly a force of nature. Following an accident in his 20s, Zoro lost both his hands at the wrist – and his direction in life. Since starting to train in 2015, he has rapidly risen as an athlete, key mentor, and inspirational voice of Achilles in Mongolia. 2018 will be Zoro’s 4th NYC Marathon, now as Athletic Director of the group – and its (unofficial) Team Captain.
A keen cyclist and triathlete, Jon has been training with Zoro in an effort to reach the illusive three-hour marathon mark. No easy feat, but giving it our all. Beyond training, Jon works to advance the social and environmental performance of mining, primarily with communities in North America and Mongolia.
Tunga & Nomin
Tunga is a seamstress by training, but an athlete and mentor by heart. From infancy, she has navigated the world without her sense of hearing. In just over a year since joining the Achilles team in 2017, she has stepped more into the public sphere and pushed herself through distance running. NYC-2018 will be her first ever trip abroad!
Active in the dance community and with an inclination towards tri-athletic alpine activities, Nomin is preparing to help Tunga to navigate New York’s urban course. By day, she can be found supporting design and planning in a Portland architectural firm or the operations of a ramen shop.
Established as an official Chapter in 2014, Achilles International Mongolia exists to enable people with disabilities to participate in mainstream running in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self-esteem and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life.
