As some of you may know, September is Suicide Awareness Month in New York. COVID-19 has created an unprecedented public health crisis in this country - and that includes mental health. But throughout this challenging time, Samaritans continues to provide confidential support to New Yorkers through its hotline, 24/7, 365 days a year.
According to the CDC, " [d]uring June 24–30, 2020, U.S. adults reported considerably elevated adverse mental health conditions associated with COVID-19. Younger adults, racial/ethnic minorities, essential workers, and unpaid adult caregivers reported having experienced disproportionately worse mental health outcomes, increased substance use, and elevated suicidal ideation. "
People need the support that Samaritans provides, and Samaritans needs our support now more than ever!
In the Samari-thon theme of helping others/helping ourselves, I will be running a 5k once a week for 5 weeks in a row.
This is a cause near and dear to my heart, so please consider donating anything you can. Suicide affects so many people - of every age, gender, and walk of life. But together we can help provide support to New Yorkers in crisis!
