This spring break, I, as well as fellow students from San Diego State University and CSU San Marcos, will be embarking on a journey to the city of San Juan Comalpa, Guatemala. This is a city with a majority of the population living under the poverty line, a city with no system for waste management but nevertheless filled with arts, culture and hard working people. For an entire week, we will be helping to build the city's schools and houses out of re-purposed materials, meeting the city's inhabitants and volunteering with the children at their schools. Alongside this experience, we will be learning about sustainability, and why "Shomrei Adamah" or keepers of the Earth is a core Jewish value. This trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a difference and step out of our comfort zones to make a difference.
I can't express enough how excited I am to be going on this volunteer trip. I feel that giving of my time and energy to help others is the best use of it and I can't wait to contribute in my own unique way.
