The American Association of Zoo Keepers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that began in San Diego in 1967 when several keepers joined forces to create a group that promotes professionalism in zoo keeping through education in the most modern and current techniques in animal management.
AAZK membership nationwide currently includes about 2,800 with individuals at all levels of zoo staff from directors, curators and veterinarians to zoo keepers, animal health technicians, volunteers and students. Members are from 48 of the 50 States, 5 Canadian Provinces and 24 foreign countries and represent nearly 250 animal-related facilities.
Throughout the years, AAZK San Diego has been involved with many conservation and educational programs on a local and international level. Our events are open to the public and we encourage everyone to join us. Details can be found on our Events page at www.sdaazk.org.
As participants in the Carslbad Marathon, we hope to bring awareness to the plight many species and habitats are encountering. Just as the runners during the marathon have a goal to make it to the finish line, our goal is for every species to be able to continue on this earth for years to come.
AAZK San Diego will be cheering marathon runners and walkers during this exciting event. Look for the big rhinos at water station # 7.
Every step you take is a step for wildlife conservation!
