A year might seem like a normal amount of time to be in a classroom, but in the arts education field, in-class residencies are often a few sessions or maybe six weeks long. What is special about the Workshop is we prioritize long-term residencies that last a semester or a year. We actively pursue them. We seek them out.
Why? Because we want to teach our students not just the art form, but how they can imagine and create and use their unique voice within that art. We can’t accomplish that with six classes. We need time to build rapport and trust with our students so we can support their creative decisions and push them in directions they might not think they can go.
This year, we want to show you what that looks like in action! So we’re following the journey of one of our teaching artists, Imani, and her classroom at Dr. Charles Drew College Prep Academy, as they work together to explore the possibilities of creative writing and poetry, and work toward being a featured classroom at our May student showcase.
As one of Imani’s students said on the first day of class…”Something crazy gonna happen!”
Support Imani’s Classroom!
Our “A Year in a Workshop Classroom” fall campaign supports Imani, her students, and all our other 4,600 Workshop students as they embark on another year of creative education together. This yearly campaign is a foundation for so much of what happens in Workshop classrooms every day, and a gift of any size means long-term arts education for our students.
