Although Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico back in September, the island remains devastated by damages from the storm. This was the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in over 80 years. Over 472,000 homes were destroyed by the storm, and housing assistance organizations have not yet been able to provide everyone in need with a temporary roof or tarp. As of December, 35% of the island is still without power. Fresh water and food remain in low supply. Over 130,000 Puerto Ricans have been forced to relocate to the mainland United States - seeking new jobs, new homes, and opportunities to support their families while the island rebuilds. Those remaining on the island will need assistance for months to come, and the Puerto Rican government expects to incur over $94 billion in storm repairs. The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine teaches us to be compassionate, to lead by example, and to promote well-being in our communities both near and far. Now is the time for our PCOM community to come together and support our fellow US citizens in Puerto Rico by donating to the Red Cross disaster relief.
