This all began with my doctor telling me to train for something. He wanted me to run a marathon. I laughed and informed him "Not even for a zombie apocalypse am I running 26 miles." I looked around with my son and BFF for something fun to do. We decided a One Tough Mudder run would be awesome. When we went to sign up, I noticed we could do the run for a charity. Never one to pass up helping out those in need and wanting to teach my son about the value of hard work and community, I jumped at the chance! I let Elijah, my son, pick the charity. In school he had read the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio and was very excited to see the myFace Organization as one of our options to choose from.
A short time later we were signed up and now we are diligently working towards getting in shape for the run and raising funds for children born with craniofacial deformities. I have learned while reaching out to my community how many people are affected. I have a friend whose husband was born with a facial tumor, others have had cleft palate repairs and one who was born missing half an ear. I do not know if myFace has helped them, but I love that there is an orgainzation out there who is willing to offer medical, surgical, and physcological assistence, as well as offering education and working to advance research into this field.
Would you please help Elijah, Angel and me to help those born with facial differences. These kids are aweseme and deal with not only the usual "growing pains" but the societal stigma of looking different. Help us to offer these children a chance at something we all take for granted - looking like everyone else.
