As we approach the holidays and people start to ask me what I want for Christmas… I once again find that I really can’t think of anything I need! So, once again in that spirit — for those of you who still want to get me something, I’d love it if you can make a contribution to Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC).
JWOC is the terrific nonprofit that I work with in Cambodia. We not only provide college scholarships for students there, but each of those students then volunteers for 5-10 hours a week to support our programs for the community. One of those programs provides free classes in English, computers and more to the local residents who otherwise would not be able to afford them. And perhaps the most important of these is the Pre-Kindergarten class. As Nesa, our incredible Librarian & Child Development Coordinator explains:
“…many parents bring their children to JWOC’s Free Classes Program in the hope that their child can learn English and have the opportunity to start their education early so they will be ready to succeed once they are able to go to school. The pre-KG class was formally started in April 2016, and it focuses on the alphabet (basic phonics), numbers 1-10 and basic English such as colors and days of the week. On average 20 students attend the class, which we teach in JWOC’s library so that we can use all of our resources to make the learning fun and interactive."
For just $1000, we can provide not only a full year’s worth of those classes, but also all the supplies to go with it — notebooks, markers, whiteboards, science and art supplies — the works!
All my best wishes to you and your families for a wonderful holiday season and and amazing 2018!!
¡Mil abrazos! (A thousand hugs!)
