Much like our Founders Story...mine also began on April 15, 2013 at the Boston Marathon...Like most Bostonians, I'll never forget that day. I remember racing into the city to meet my then fiance (we would be married 11 days later) and her family to watch her sister Katy cross the finish line. I stepped onto Boyleston St just above the finish line across from the Lenox Hotel, the crowd was electric as I made my ascent to the fire station where I was to meet my fiance and family. We weren't together 10 minutes when we heard the first explosion, followed by the omnious plume of smoke. I climbed the fence on the bridge to get a better perspective when the second went off...at first I thought perhaps there was a subway collision under ground, but then the cries began to make their way up Boyleston to us. We made the decision to make our way up the route to find Katy and make sure she was safe. We finally intercepted her in the Fenway area, she was insistent upon finishing the race she had trained so hard for. After running 25+ miles, she, along with the rest of us, made the trek along the shoulder of Storrow Drive where we met my sister Shannon who was able to safely shuttle us out of the city.
That day changed the lives of so many people in the city of Boston and abroad. As I look back on that day, I now have an opportunity to do my part to help those I couldn't some 6 years ago, by providing the resources to those that need the support. I couldn't be more excited to be a part of the "A Leg Forever" family as we continue to enrich the lives of some many. Follow me on my journey leading up to the Marathon and beyond. I want to thank my family, friends, colleagues, and those who have supported me along this journey. I love you all dearly, and thank you for your continued support as we continue to make life a little easier for those who need it!
Our story began on April 15, 2013 at the Boston Marathon...in the blink of an eye our world changed forever...
A Leg Forever Charitable Foundation was established in 2014 a year after the marathon bombings by Elizabeth Norden, Mother of JP and Paul Norden, who each lost a leg in the 2nd explosion.
6 years have passed since that horrific day…the Boston Marathon bombings changed the lives of many families. Two hundred sixty-nine innocent bystanders were injured, 17 people lost limbs and 5 lost their lives as a result of that day.
The Norden family was hit twice as hard when brothers, JP and Paul Norden, lost their right legs. JP lost the lower half of his leg, Paul lost his above the knee, and both came close to losing their lives. JP made it to the hospital with only a pint of blood barely remaining in his body. Paul was placed in a coma for 7 days while his body fought to stay alive.
The Norden family’s situation, although horrific, was also blessed with a tremendous amount of love, prayer and support of caring individuals from all over the world who reached out to lend a helping hand when their family needed it the most. Amputees from near and far came forward to show support and share their stories of healing and encouragement. Public donations and the One Fund enabled JP and Paul access to the best prosthetic limbs available and for that the Norden family is forever grateful.
For these reasons and many more A Leg Forever Charitable Foundation was created. The Norden Family aims to share the knowledge they have gained through this experience with the public and "pay it forward" to help others.
So much has happened since that day…never in our lives would we imagine how our lives have changed. Our foundation has helped tremendously in the healing process in many ways. We have been blessed to meet so many wonderful people from all over the world that will remain long lasting friends.
To date A Leg Forever Charitable Foundation has raised over $200,000.00 and we have assisted 23 amputees. Our supporters have been amazing and because of them we have been able to stand true to our mission - which means the world to us!
The Boston Marathon changed our lives in 2013…and now it has become a major fundraising opportunity for our foundation. A Leg Forever Teammates are committed to our cause, and dedicated to making a difference along with us. We hope you will support them as they run the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston on April 20, 2020.
DID YOU KNOW...
- Prosthetic limbs can range from $25,000 to $140,000 plus?
- A new limb is needed every 3 to 5 years for the remainder of life?
- There are various prosthetic limbs for running, golfing, and swimming?
- Health insurance only covers a portion of the prosthetic and the amputee has to worry about covering the rest of the bill?
Ask yourself this question. Could you live with one pair of shoes for your entire life? Well amputees need additional limbs to help them adapt to their new way of life too!
Help us spread awareness of these and many other challenges amputees face. With your support we can all make a difference in the lives of amputees TOGETHER!
Thank you for your support!
Liz, JP and Paul Norden
