ONE BIG THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for supporting the Dyslexia Center because they have been helping me cope with my disability. I am so thankful for the amazing volunteers that are dedicated to making me more successful.
I will be a freshman in high school the next school year. I have been getting extra help with reading since I began my schooling through private school, public school and tutoring centers. I have a full-time classroom aid at my school and am pulled out for specialized language and math due to my Dyslexia. The only class I have ever felt ‘normal’ in is art. Here I don’t have to work ten times as hard to achieve the same as the other kids. While I have some incredible teachers at my school who would love to see me succeed, I was so excited to learn about the existence of the Dyslexia Center. Instead of general ‘cookie cutter’ help with reading, there were individuals out there that really understand my struggles and could help me progress further. I am thankful there is a place where there are other kids like me, where I don’t feel so alone in my struggles.
When I was younger, I would come home and cry because I thought I was dumb since I couldn’t read like the other kids. Over the last few years I have come to realize that I am just wired differently and that parts of Dyslexia gives you a gift ‘normal’ people do not have. My tutoring at the Dyslexia Center has helped build this new found confidence.
Aside from reading, spelling has been a huge issue for me. To give you an idea of how big of an issue it is, much of the time I am so far off that spell-check cannot figure out what I am trying to write. My Dyslexia Center tutor has been helping me a lot with spelling. I know it may not seem like a big deal to most, but I am excited I can now spell the word “sentence” without the help of spell-check. It is all of these little things that add up to one big THANK YOU!
