Start 2019 with a good deed. Give a home to one of the brave men who defended our homeland during the Four Day War of April 2016.
Two years ago, Captain Arsen Arakelyan was heavily wounded in the field of battle while fighting for Artsakh. Since then, his life has never been the same - months spent bound to a hospital bed, not being able to see his children, 3th and 4th degree burns to his legs, hands, face and head, unimaginable pain...
The 31-year-old father of two has served in the Artsakh Defense Army nearly all his adult life. On April 1, when the April War started, he was on duty at a frontline army base. He fought in the War for 3 days before the life-changing injury. Arsen remembers that day vividly.
“There is an abandoned construction in the Talish village. On April 4, I was there with a special task. I remember greeting a group of volunteer fighters and then going inside the building to drink some water. I heard gunshots and went outside. Our boys were trying to shoot down an unmanned aerial vehicle. Suddenly, the drone started firing, and I was covered in fire...”. On that day, 6 of Arsen’s brothers in arms were killed.
Fast forward several months and 5 surgeries later, and Arsen was ready to go back to the Artsakh Army. Although his burns and injuries qualified him for disability pension, he preferred to forfeit the disability status and resume his service.
Now, Arsen continues serving the Artsakh Defense Army at a base near Stepanakert. As a result of his injuries, he is unable to serve at the frontline, like before. This means lower salary – less income for a family that was already struggling to provide for their two little children.
Without a home of their own, Arsen’s family has to spend the majority of their little income on rent. This and the regular medical expenses have created a very difficult situation for them.
A family of a hero shouldn't have to live like this. Arsen risked his life and sacrificed his health to defend our country, our home. The least we can do is make sure that his children grow up in a home of their own.
To purchase and renovate a home in Stepanakert for Arsen's family, the Tufenkian Foundation has already raised 10,000 USD. We need another 15,000 USD to support this family, and contributions of any size will help.
Since April 2016, when the Tufenkian Foundation started its "Housing Support to Wounded Soldiers" initiative, it has built, renovated or purchased homes for families of 10 soldiers in Artsakh. The construction of the 11th soldier's house is currently underway. Find out more here.
