200 miles, 8 days, 3 friends, one country, and a mission: provide dignified and meaningful jobs to the people of Haiti. May 2020.
SUPPORT US IN OUR JOURNEY
Marco, Matt, and Carl first crossed paths in 2009 during their college years in Pittsburgh. Little did we know that some 11 years later they’d convince each other to run a relay across the country of Haiti for a charitable cause. Who would have thought... running 200 miles… Haiti... the 3 of us. Why not, right?
After being introduced to one of the run’s organizers, Viv, back in Pittsburgh, we would hear about this wild race across Haiti every year and would always say something along the lines of “oh that sounds fun! I’d like to do it one day.” It went on like this for a few years until finally, the stars aligned and the gears clicked into place... We were in. A few nervous “wait, are we actually doing this?” calls turned it “ok, we’re doing it”.
We are beyond excited for the opportunity to be apart of this remarkable event that supports an incredible organization and cause. We’ve followed the Work team for many years and are so proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish. With this run, we hope not just to complete an exhausting feat of endurance but also to contribute as best we can to their mission.
Please join us in helping us reach out joint goal of raising $15,000 for families in need. Work is a non-profit organization working in Haiti to end poverty one dignified job at a time. They work with families in the Menelas community of Port-au-Prince by providing education, training resources and opportunities for healthy employment.
We'll keep you posted on our efforts leading up to and during the event (May 23 - 30), along with what we were able to learn from the experience. It’s going to be a unique challenge in many ways for all three of us and something we know we’ll remember fondly for a lifetime. We can’t wait to hit the ground running.
“If you want to run fast, run alone. If you want to run far, run together”. We’ve got a long way to go, and we’re thankful to have each other, your support, and all of those we will meet along this journey.
Originally hailing from Atlanta, Marco has been into running since accidentally finishing 4th place in his Kindergarten fun run. Since then he’s turned it up a notch or two by participating in Half-Ironmans, Ultra-Marathons, swims from Alcatraz, etc. Outside of working in software, he spends his free time traveling, taking photos, adding to his record collection, and inventing whimsical platitudes. He’s lived life in San Francisco for the past 8 years and before that in Pittsburgh. He’s most excited to get to know Haiti simply by passing through the streets and experiencing everyday life. And of course, cracking open a cold beer in the evening.
Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, live and work in Pittsburgh, explore and learn from the world.
Matt’s journey from growing up on a seaweed farm in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to opening a craft brewery in Pittsburgh to now running 200+ miles across Haiti has stemmed from a simple goal. Keep going.
There’s a Haitian proverb “Deye mon, gen mon” that translates to “there are mountains beyond mountains”. With every new challenge, Matt looks forward to the climb and working together to get to the peak (we’ll see how he feels on the final climb on the run).
Born and raised in the California Bay Area. I'm now back living in the bay after joining the Military and going to college with these two clowns that have power to convince me to do things that I know I'll pay for later, hahahaha.
While I was in the military I was hit by an IED that required me to learn how to walk again 32 surgeries and 24 months of rehab. So this specific challenge is very personal for me.
My history shows that I'm always trying to leave a positive mark everywhere I go. The chance to go to Haiti is an amazing experience within its self. The fact that I'm running across it to raise money for the people makes it special and is something that makes me proud to be human.
