7283 days. That is how long I spent in prison as an innocent man. My name is Terrance Lewis, and I am the founder and President of the Liberation Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Philadelphia. We're raising a dollar for every day of my wrongful incarceration.
I am an exoneree who, at the age of 17, was wrongfully accused and subsequently convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. I spent a total of 21 years, 5 months, and 5 days wrongfully incarcerated before being exonerated by the Conviction Integrity Unit of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office and released on May 21, 2019. My wrongful incarceration was the direct result of egregious misconduct by the Philadelphia Police Department.
During my decades of incarceration, I envisioned an organization that would free wrongfully convicted people and support them after their release. Now, nearly a year after I finally walked free, my dream is a reality.
In April, I created the Terrance Lewis Liberation Foundation (aka The Liberation Foundation), a Philadelphia-based non-profit with the mission to advocate for wrongfully convicted Pennsylvanians by connecting them to legal services and providing them with support as they write pro-se submissions and navigate the legal system.
The Liberation Foundation works with local law students to process pro-se submissions and ensure that clients have legal representation. With a team of students, volunteer lawyers and investigators, we help incarcerated individuals as they navigate the legal system seeking relief from wrongful convictions and disproportionate sentences. We're six months in, and just getting started.
Friend, I hope that you will support my dream as my team and The Liberation Foundation. Your donation will allow us to acquire the resources we need: funds for rented office space in Philadelphia, a printer and related materials, and maintaing a website, in addition to hiring a full-time executive director.
With your support, we will be able to change the lives of the wrongfully incarcerated, helping to provide them with the greatest gift of all: freedom. I hope that you will consider supporting us as we begin our fight to aid wrongfully-convicted Philadelphians.
