In the spring of 2016, our 12 year old son, Joseph, started to complain about headaches and being tired. After a lacrosse tournament, he was covered head to toe in bruises, and we finally took him to the doctor. He was diagnosed with High Risk B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and our world was turned upside down. He immediately began treatment and, over the last three plus years, has endured countless lumbar punctures, transfusions, side effects from medications that are supposed to be saving his life, hospital stays, weight gain and loss, terrible aches and pains, and has lost his hair three times. Through it all, Joe has proven to be stronger and braver than I could have ever imagined.
While we navigated through our new reality, we were blessed to meet many angels who supported us and Joe. As he now nears the end of his treatment plan (August 12th), I want to give back and help and support others going through the same thing. That's when I found Imerman Angels, which I then joined as a mentor. Imerman Angels knows how important it is to have someone support you, and they provide free, one on one mentor angels to the cancer patient, survivor or caregiver.
Then, I found out they are an official charity for the Chicago Marathon, and even though up until 3 months ago I said I would never run a marathon, I signed up!
