Story

The 9/11 Promise Run, established in 2016, is an event that is being held to keep a promise that was made in 2001 when our country, the United States of America, was attacked. Many lives were lost, and we continue to deal with the aftermath. This event honors the lives lost, the emergency personnel who responded with the greatest of courage, and our military who continue to fight for this country’s safety and freedom, here and abroad. The 9/11 Promise Run is not a race – but an event that is being held for a bigger cause. There is no winner – or second place or third place.

In 2016, a team of seven runners from different backgrounds came together and ran from the Pentagon to Ground Zero while raising over $23K all of which went to charity. During this run, they connected and formed friendships with local fire departments, police departments and community members.  They remembered, and they honored.

Each year, this event has grown in size and in fundraising totals. More individuals have signed up to participate; more fire houses, police departments and community members have also gotten involved. To date, the event has raised $150K all of which has gone to charity! The charities which have been involved include Tuesday’s Children, FealGood Foundation, American Red Cross, Operation Homefront and Hope For The Warriors.

In 2019, relay teams will continue the run from the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial on Monday, 09/09/2019 and finish on Wednesday, 09/11/2019 at Ground Zero.  Teams consist of 8-10 people and will cover 240 miles.  All teams must average a 10-minute mile pace to ensure that the mileage is covered.

NEW in 2019! We will have relay teams (2-man or 3-man teams) sign up to bike from the Pentagon area to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA!  This group will also leave on 09/09/2019 and arrive in Pennsylvania on 09/11/2019.  The inaugural 2019 9/11 Promise Bike is a challenging 3-day road bike ride.   Covering approximately 210mi and 15,000’ of vertical along two-lane state and single-lane county roads, the ride will challenge every category of rider. We welcome experienced road cyclists, from novice to advanced, to join us on this meaningful journey and with our sag support, we’ll ensure every cyclist can complete the entire journey, even if it means you need a lift up and over some of the challenging climbs.  Again, this is not a race, but a ride to remember and honor.  Unlike the 9/11 Promise Run, interested cyclists will sign up as individuals (instead of joining a team). The actual ride, however, will be accomplished by groups of like-ability cyclists.

In 2018, the 9/11 Promise Run, Inc. established 501(c)(3) status and so in 2019, the mission of the event becomes even greater!   Fundraising efforts will continue as the 9/11 Promise Run charity provides scholarships to qualified children of first responders and military service members who have been killed or injured and are unable to hold employment.  As this charity and part of the mission is new, and fundraising is just beginning, the first scholarships will be awarded starting in the academic school year of 2020/21.

Each athlete will experience a journey of a lifetime! The opportunity to remember and honor, to raise funds for children of those who have sacrificed for our communities and nation, and to grow with family and friends.

There is a nominal registration fee of $100 for the run and $125 for the bike which will help pay for the event costs. Additionally, from December 7, 2018 to October 1, 2019 each individual will commit to raising a minimum of $1000 that will go directly to the 9/11 Promise Run charity. Each athlete will be issued a Crowdrise fundraising webpage that he/she can create and provide a story as to why they are running. This webpage will allow for donors to directly donate to the charity and a live feed will show how much has been donated.
