On August 9, a group of 5 Calgary triathletes (Ella & Mary Hnatyshyn, Eric Dokter, Sophia Howell, and Sara Bourque) will be doing a Half Ironman (70.3) to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society .
All year, we spend almost all our free time training in swimming, biking, and running in order to spend summer weekends competing in elite triathlon races. Due to COVID-19, all races have been cancelled, however we have kept training on an almost-normal basis (since we love it!). As such, we have decided to put our work to good use and complete a Half Ironman on our own, with the goal of raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
We believe everyone has been impacted by Cancer. This includes Ella and Mary's family, as in 2018 their father was diagnosed with and treated for appendix cancer. In usual circumstances, we can’t imagine what cancer patients go through. However, the experience of going through cancer treatment during a pandemic is even more unfathomable.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, people living with cancer are at a higher risk of more serious outcomes of COVID-19 because of their compromised immune system, and patients and caregivers are feeling more isolated, lonely and uncertain about how their care may be affected by the pandemic. Due to the pandemic, Canadian Cancer Society has experienced a 40% increase in requests for virtual support and services for people living with cancer.
If you choose to donate, your donation will offer care and compassion to Canadians affected by cancer during COVID-19, and will also help fund groundbreaking research. The Canadian Cancer Society is funding a clinical trial that is in progress and could potentially result in a vaccine for COVID-19. Learn more at cancer.ca.
For those that do not know, a Half Ironman (or “70.3”) is comprised of a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike, and a 21.1km run, and is much longer (approximately 4 times longer) than the races we usually compete in. Additionally we will be doing it on a self-made course with no spectators or the other usual motivations of a race.
Our goal is to raise $7030. If we reach our goal Eric will be bleaching his hair!!! Thank you for your support, your donation is going towards a great cause .
