Not too long ago (although it seems like a lifetime!), we had planned to mark Lowell Community Health Center’s 50th Anniversary with a big Community Celebration.
We’re sorry that we can’t celebrate with you in person.
Here is how you can still help us celebrate our mission and mark this milestone anniversary: by donating to our $50 for 50 Campaign, supporting our Interpreter Fund.
Medical Interpretation is a cornerstone of our commitment to health care access and equity. But medical insurance doesn’t pay for it it. So we do. Frankly, we can’t imagine the staggering cost of NOT offering medical interpretation, especially during this crisis.
Now, we are asking each and every one of you to help us raise $2,500 for medical interpretation through this GoFundMe campaign.
By supporting the power of understanding, you'll also be helping us reach our overall goal to raise $50,000 for Medical Interpretation by November 7th.
MEDICAL INTERPRETATION – THE FACTS
· Typically, more than 1/3 of Health Center patients - some 11,500 people - are best served in a language other than English.
· With shifting much of our care to telehealth due to COVID-19, 58% of visits require an interpreter (up from 30% pre-COVID). That’s more than 400 visits a day.
· Medical Interpretation by one of our highly-trained, certified staff members or through telephonic service costs an average of $50 per visit, adding up to more than $1 million each year.
Our patients are the reason we invest heavily in interpreter services, both in-person and via telephone. Many are recent immigrants or refugees from all over the world.
We cannot let their health care get lost in translation.
We hear from so many patients that interpreters make all the difference. Patients like Wendy, who delivered a happy, healthy baby boy because interpreters were there to explain a complex medical condition. Or Cheryl, a young woman who was able to overcome depression, diabetes, and blindness with the help of her interpreter, and friend, Maria.
Access to an interpreter says, we see you. We respect you. We honor you.
In honor of our 50th Anniversary, and the values of equity and inclusion that started the Health Center movement, we ask you today to make a tax-deductible donation of $50 -- or whatever amount feels right to you -- to support Medical Interpretation.
