Help me raise much needed funds along with blood and platelet donations to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Please consider making a donation, in return I'll be running 4 miles every 4 hours for 4 days.
I have found it pretty tough not being able to do as much as I would like to for my fiancée, friends, and my Dad while they all battle cancer. What I can do is raise awareness and funds to help the fight to cure cancer.
Why The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?
6 months before the start date of this challenge, June 16th 2020, our lives were completely changed, I was sitting on the couch with my fiancée .... a few hours later she was in Weill Cornell medical center starting her treatment, having just received a diagnosis that she had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a cancer of the bone marrow and blood.
Since then she has spent roughly half of the last 6 months in and out of the hospital; going through 4 rounds of chemotherapy, multiple blood and platelet transfusions, and now a bone marrow transplant.
She has been nothing short of amazing while taking on this challenge, staying incredibly positive and focused on beating her diagnosis. Supported from near and far by loving friends and family giving her strength, all while receiving world class care from the specialists at Weill Cornell. With everyone’s continued support and her never give up attitude we plan on marrying in 2021 and getting back to our many adventures, exploring the world and creating a long and happy life together.
While we are in a position that insurance covers the majority of the expenses, we realize that others are not so fortunate and there is still SO much that can be done to prevent, diagnose, and treat this terrible disease.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma society has invested nearly $1.3 billion in cancer research, funding over 250 research grants around the world, advancing 56 blood cancer therapies since 2017 and paid more than $431 million in co-pay financial assistance. They will not stop until a cure is found and 100% of donations will go directly to them to help them do this. As a caregiver they have spent hours on the phone with me, answering my questions. They do so many amazing things, please find more information about the charity here: https://www.lls.org/who-we-are/mission
Please give what you can to support this amazing charity. I realize that a lot of non-profits are fundraising at this time of year and 2020 has been especially hard for a lot of us, so if you are not in a position to give financially please contact your local blood bank and donate whole blood or platelets. There is a shortage in many places, including NYC, of this vital resource that so many cancer and other hospital patients desperately need.
I am challenging myself to run 4 miles, every 4 hours for 4 days.
...4 miles to signify the 4 times my Fiancee has been admitted to hospital since diagnosis
...Every 4 hours as that's how often – day and night – her vitals are checked while in the hospital.
and 4 days to signify the 4 rounds of chemotherapy she has been through
Starting at 12pm on Thursday December 17th and finishing after my last run at noon on Monday December 21st, I’ll be running 4 miles every 4 hours, (8am, 12pm, 4pm, 8pm, 12am, 4am) rounding this challenge out by running my twenty fifth 4 miler to make it a total of 100 miles in 4 and a bit days. I figure if it takes me 30-40 minutes per run, I should have enough time to shower, change, eat, maybe catch a few Zzz’s before starting the next run…….
I would love for you to join me in a challenge – you can run, walk, bike for 4 miles, 4 laps, 4 blocks for 4 days, 4 hours, 4 minutes – whatever '4' you fancy!
Or '4go' (forego) four little luxuries and donate the equivalent in cash or even how about '4going' a Christmas gift and ask your gift givers to make a donation instead?
How about getting together with 3 friends and make appointments at the blood bank to donate blood/platelets.
I will be documenting my challenge on here and social media, as this former rugby player approaching his forties attempts to run further than he would over a year in less than a week.
There are so many cancer charities doing amazing things, I wish I could fundraise for them all, I hope I will be able to do more in the future.
Thank you for your support, please give what you can and stay safe.
Kage, Tess, Dad, and all those that are going through something similar I am taking on this challenge in your name.
