Barbershop Books in Harlem creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops and provides literacy training to barbers across America. Why barbershops? More than 85% of young black male 4th grade students struggle with reading in the United States. Barbershop Books creates safe, supportive learning environments for black boys by leveraging the cultural significance of barbershops in black communities, to increase access to culturally relevant, age-appropriate, and gender-responsive children’s books.
Literacy is so important, especially for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. I cannot stress enough how differently my life would've turned out had I not had access to books and safe spaces in which to learn to love them as a child. All children deserve the mentorship and encouragement I received, and all children deserve stories that both challenge and reflect their realities. If you are financially able, I’d love it if you donated.
THANK YOU! Every little bit helps ❤
