Hi, everyone! Can you believe it? I get to run the Boston Marathon, on behalf of 261 Fearless. I know many of you think running 26.2 miles, by choice, is nuts! But I am SO excited to run my hometown race, AND help raise money for an organization that empowers and unites women through running.
261 Fearless was founded by Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, as a numbered entrant (number 261). The mission of the group is:
😊 To empower women through running
😊 To inspire, motivate and educate women globally, helping them find the joy of running through our non-competitive, judgment-free 261 running program
😊 To help provide running opportunities for women, independent of social, religious or geographical background
😊 To bring women around the world together through a supportive network and share strength with each other
I started running in 2001. At first, it was an efficient way to fit in my exercise. But, as I improved, I came to love the sport. I finished my first marathon in 2009. At age 48, I think the Boston Marathon may be my last.
I am not fast, but I am very determined. Running is something I look forward to the first time I visit a new city, or after a long day of sitting at work. All it requires a pair of shoes and a willingness to get off the couch (and maybe some energy gels, and some earbuds, and a hat...).
I am also an Airline Pilot. Only about 8% of Airline Pilots, in the world, are women. Throughout my aviation career, I have met many other amazing, and interesting women pilots. Together we have encouraged and supported each other in facing the challenges inherent in working in a male dominated field.
I am so proud to have been selected to represent 261 Fearless in Boston. This opportunity is the perfect combination of 2 of my passions...non-competitive running (we all know I’m not going to win the race 😉), and helping raise funds to foster fearless females.
Now, here comes the ask...I have set a fundraising goal of $10,000, which is a lot of money. That’s why I am not asking just one person 🤑. I am hoping, if you are a runner, or fearless, or a woman...you want to become a runner, or more fearless...or if you want to show your support for a fearless, female runner (aka Me), you will consider making a donation.
Please know that every donation will help propel me up Heartbreak Hill on April 20!
