Last year Cambodia Town was faced with a difficult decision. We had to cancel our annual parade and culture festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic after nearly a year of planning. These cultural events are extremely important to Cambodian-Americans and the City of Long Beach as it’s the time of the year where we all gather as a community to celebrate Cambodian New Year’s. Every year, the mostly volunteer run parade and culture festival faces its share of challenges, but we have never had to cancel our event until COVD-19.
We were devastated, but quickly started considering a virtual event. The problem was we had no idea how to do it, but we couldn’t let the community down. Fortunately, with our incredible all-volunteer team and support from our local organizations and officials we were able to be one of the first cultural parades and festivals to go virtual ever! The fact that we were able to accomplish it, emphasizes the beauty and resiliency of the Cambodian people.
Our virtual event was extremely successful showcasing traditional music and dancing, stories about handicraft makers and artisan and blessing from a variety of religious practices.
So now, it’s 2021 and Cambodian New Year’s is coming. We are forced to go virtual again and already have great things planned. A whole new set of traditional dances with detailed explanations about their history, popular Cambodian music, stories about our ancient traditions and stories about Cambodian-American’s in Long Beach.
But unfortunately, resources are limited and we need your help. Just like last year we need to hire videographers, editors and graphic designers in both Cambodia and Long Beach. So please join us with your support. We cannot do this without you. Each dollar you spend goes to making this event happen.
Simply put, we need you to be part of our team.
To show our appreciation we will feature your name, your families name or your business or organizations name LIVE on the day of the event in the final credits and in print in the program catalog.
Please donate anything you can and we will see you on April 24th @ 6pm.
