Every dollar raised will go towards Maniilaq Association’s effort to improve shareholders’ lives.

To survive in an often harsh and isolated environment, the people of the NANA region have maintained a rich culture that embraces community, hard work, and respect. However, the needs in the NANA region are immense — employment and income options are limited, the environment is punishing, and suicide rates are high. Its remote location means a high cost of living, with all materials, food, fuel, and supplies flown in. Akima’s shareholders in the 11 villages of the NANA region often turn to Maniilaq Association for help. Maniilaq offers support to individuals with varying needs — whether it’s teaching an Elder to manage their diabetes; connecting a single mother with access to nutritious food for her family; helping to pay for a burial for a loved one; or providing fuel assistance to keep a house warm during sub-zero temperatures. For Shareholder Awareness Month, we’re leading the way to offer support to shareholders in their home region. From July 15 - 30, we’re raising funds for Maniilaq Association to help shareholders gain better access to health, wellness, and support resources. To help multiply our efforts, Akima has pledged to match every dollar donated — up to $20,000!

A non-profit corporation, Maniilaq Association offers free and low-cost health, tribal, and social services to residents of the NANA region to help meet urgent needs of the community. Your dollars will help local residents in need pay for:

Medical: The Association offers comprehensive primary medical care, nursing, and community health services based out of the 80,000-square-foot, $42 million Health Center in Kotzebue, as well as clinics in local villages. In addition, Maniilaq offers access to dental and eye clinics, physical therapy, inpatient services, emergency services, and more. As the only medical care available in the region, these services are critical to the wellbeing of our shareholders.

Elder care: Utuqqanaat Inaat (“a place for Elders”) is a facility located in the Maniilaq Health Center building that houses to up to 18 Elders with long-term care needs that require 24/7 attention. Nursing home services here include personal care, medication management, meal preparations and service, snacks and hydration, a full range of activities designed to meet individual needs, and more. The facility also prepares and delivers meals in Kotzebue.

Community wellness: A robust community health program includes prevention education, fitness, and wellness using holistic strategies that incorporate traditional values and beliefs. Maniilaq oversees programs such as Tobacco Prevention and Control; the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program; a Diabetes and Nutrition Department; and an Office of Environmental Health, which helps evaluate hazards in air, water, soil, and food and investigates how to limit exposures to those hazards.

Social support services: Maniilaq provides services in the areas of drug and alcohol prevention and treatment, mental health services, suicide prevention, wellness, and disability services. The Maniilaq Counseling and Recovery Services provides mental health and substance abuse treatment — including individual and family therapy, play therapy, crisis counseling, and more.

Employment and assistance:Maniilaq’s Tribal Government Services division helps eligible tribal members enrolled into a federally recognized tribe find employment, receive training, get help with basic needs or emergency assistance, and pay for childcare.

Help meet our goal of raising $40,000 during Shareholder Awareness Month to help Maniilaq continue its vital support of the people of the NANA region!
