Ever since I was a little boy growing up in sunny southern California, I have been drawn to the ocean. I rode one wave in elementary school and I was hooked; I knew the ocean was home. I would beg my dad to take me and my friends to the beach every weekend to go bodyboarding. He would take us most, if not all, weekends watching us from the sand as we played in the water. Both my parents don’t know how to swim, which is wild to think about since my top hobbies are surfing, scuba diving and swimming. They were always supportive of my ocean minded ways, and worried for my safety since I was a little reckless, but I attribute my love for the ocean to the support they gave me when I was child. If it was not for them, I wouldn’t appreciate the nature around me with these great hobbies.
In the past year I have started to get into running and I wanted to challenge myself in 2020 with running a marathon. My girlfriend ran one in December, and I knew I wanted to run one when I felt the race day energy. Once I saw that Project AWARE was a Chicago Marathon charity, it seemed like a match made in heaven to connect my old hobbies with my new.
Project AWARE is a great organization from my home town trying to help protect and keep our oceans clean. They empower ocean enthusiasts and divers all around the world to do work both in and out of the water. They run community events, such has beach cleanups and cleanup dives, and push policy changes at different levels of government to have a lasting impact. The link below goes and the video above goes over their mission and priorities.
Supporting organization like Project AWARE will help us maintain and protect our waters so we can keep showing future generations the wonders of the ocean, like my dad did with me. Any donation, even small, helps!
Thank you for your support, our oceans (and I) appreciate it!
