For the fifth consecutive year, the East Carolina University Baseball Program will be growing mustaches to raise money and awareness for ALS Research. The Pirates will be joined this year by the University of Michigan Baseball Program, the Memphis Baseball program and CoopStrong. Erik Bakich, the Head Coach of the Michigan Baseball team, played at East Carolina under Keith LeClair and was teammates with Pirates Head Coach Cliff Godwin.
This year we will be partnered with CoopStrong. CoopStrong is a non-profit organization formed to honor the memory of Nelson Cooper, a beloved husband, father, professor, and friend who passed away from ALS in May 2017. He has a special place in the ECU Baseball program being a professor to numerous of our players in his tenure as well as being close friends with Hall of Fame Head Coach Keith LeClair. CoopStrong keeps the memory and legacy of Dr. Nelson Cooper alive through scholarships awarded to Recreation Sciences students at East Carolina University.
As most of Pirate Nation knows, the ECU Baseball program has been greatly affected by ALS. Former Head Coach, Keith LeClair, was diagnosed with ALS while coaching at ECU and later passed away after his fight with ALS. The ECU Baseball program continues to follow the mission, vision, and characteristics that made Coach LeClair such a tremendous leader, father, friend, and coach. It is our goal to fight to Strikeout ALS in Coach LeClair's honor.
All donations go towards funding care and support for families, and research through The ALS Association NC Chapter. Please help us spread our mission of Striking Out ALS in Coach LeClair's honor. Go Pirates!
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. Presently there is no known cause of the disease, though increased financial support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the meantime it costs an average of $200,000 annually to provide care for an ALS patient.
Help make a difference and please donate today!
