Story
  Jan 17 2020

This year’s Breakthru Hockey Invitational fundraiser will support the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation’s following programs: Building Champions, Healthy Hawks, Family Skate, Summer Skate, Hawks Heart and STEMP Camp. Each program helps advance the Foundation’s mission of providing access to programming in the community, to grow the game and serve the community for a healthier, smarter and more secure Chicago. Each of these programs are new in the last year and are in need of funding to continue their good work as we make the Fifth Third Arena a beacon of opportunity on the West Side.

Building Champions: 7-week afterschool program for middle school students that builds social and emotional skills through sports. Year 1 of this programs focuses on introducing and defining key life lessons gained from being part of a team: Respect, Leadership, Decision-Making, Perseverance and Teamwork. Year 2 focuses on building students’ confidence in being able to use these skills. Curriculum Partner: BUILD, Inc.

Healthy Hawks: summer program that teaches kids, aged 10-13, the benefits of healthy eating and physical fitness. Each day fresh produce, nuts, and grains are brought in for kids to make their own nutrient-dense snack. Students also participate in a range of physical activities in the gym where Chicago Blackhawks players train. Last summer over 850 youth were served. Curriculum Partner: Pilot Light.

Family Skate: spring program that gives nonprofit organizations an opportunity to build community and family relationships. Participants come during a weekend public skate and are given free admission, skates and transportation.

Summer Skate: provides nonprofit organizations a free field trip opportunity that helps to broaden the scope of activities they are able to offer.

Hawks Heart: Launched in September 2019, Hawks Heart is the foundation’s new afterschool art program. Using the prompt question “What’s Your Goal?” students are guided through creative exercises to help them design a personal logo that reflects how they see themselves and their future. At the end of the program students will get a t-shirt featuring their design. Curriculum Partner: Urban Gateways.

STEM Camp: Launching Summer 2020, this 4-week program will combine STEM concepts with hockey to create fun and enriching learning opportunities. Lessons include The Science of Skates, Slapshot Physics and more.
