They say one moment in time can change everything, and “they” are right. A moment can stop time, or create it. A moment can cause the greatest joy one ever feels, and, unfortunately, the greatest pain. Ironically, the brevity of such moments in every second, every minute, and every hour of every day can cause the most life-altering outcomes, the most unexpected change. “In a moment everything can change, and in a moment, YOU can change everything.”
The Simmonds Family, like so many families, experienced such a moment when their heroic, brave son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, partner, and friend, DJ Simmonds, made the ultimate sacrifice for his community as a Boston Police Officer injured during the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings-resulting in his passing a year later.
Last year was both humbling and gratifying to be able to run in honor of DJ and his family. Seeing his family come together to honor his legacy and never allow him to be forgotten was one of these life-altering moments for me and so many others both DJ and his family have touched. I will never forget the smiles both his mother and sister displayed upon first meeting them. It was like I had known them for years. Warm, genuine, friendly-just like so many describe DJ. They were thanking me for running the marathon in honor of DJ-when, truthfully, all I could do was thank them for the moments that I knew would follow. The moments that would change us all-forever...and, they did.
Last year was a great trial run. This year is the finale. I will be putting it all on the table as a more informed “marathoner” for DJ Simmonds, a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice. Please help honor DJ Simmonds by clicking on the link below to donate. Any amount helps.
Thank you for your generous donation to the DJ Simmonds Scholarship that gives aid to current Randolph high school students who want to pursue higher education.
