2020 Bee Brave 5K Run and Walk

YES! There will be a Bee Brave 5k on Saturday, October 10, 2020!

Registration remains open until Thursday, October 8 at 5:00 pm.

All registrants from October 1-8 will be offered a previous years shirt. They will be available for pickup either Friday evening from 5-6 OR on race day at the course , 7500 Alaska Ave. on a first come, first serve basis.

As a reminder , there will be NO LATE REGISTRATION on race day. Deadline to register is Thursday, October 8 at 5:00 pm.

This years course will be a cross country run throughout the beautiful property of Shagbark Farms. Click here to view a course map!

If things remain as they are now, we are planning 2 registration options for you this year-an IN PERSON Adult/Youth walk/run and a VIRTUAL Adult/Youth walk/run. Cost for all will be $25.

We are offering a $20 discount when 3 or more people from the same household register. Please contact us at so we can share this special promo code with you if you plan to do this.

We will follow the current state guidelines for holding events and will take every precaution to keep everyone safe. We plan to offer 2-3 heats for runners and 1-2 heats for walkers. This will be determined by #’s of registrants for each. We will start the first heat at 8:30 for runners who can complete a 5k in 25 minutes or less. The next heat will go off between 8:45-9 for those who can complete a 5k in 35 minutes or less and if necessary, add another heat. We will have Walkers start immediately after the last heat of runners. All of the starts will be staggered to stay with the social distancing recommendations, however families and groups who are comfortable together can certainly start at the same time. All participants will be offered a bib with a chip for timing, however, if you don’t care about timing, there would be no need to take a bib. The start and finish lines will be in separate areas.

Other important info to know:

-there will be no late registration on race day

-t-shirt pickup will be available for pickup on race day at the field (7500 Alaska Ave, Caledonia). Team captains who have several virtual members are asked to pickup ALL of their team shirts

-state mandates prevent us from holding our pre/post ceremony😥

-to be guaranteed a 2020 t-shirt, your online registration needs to be completed by Sept 30. Any registrants after that day will be offered a prior years shirt.

-bottled water and a granola bar will be offered to all finishers

-there will be no awards given out this year due to no ceremony. You will be recognized on our Facebook page

-we ask that when you are finished that you leave in a timely manner to help us stay within state mandates for gatherings

-there will be NO refunds issued. IF we have to cancel the in person event, we will go all virtual.

The importance of raising funds for the VanAndel Institute has never been greater than it is this year as so many of their fundraising events have been canceled.  With the protocols we have in place, I am certain we will be able to do our part to help support them, all while keeping everyone safe.  The Bee Brave community is faithful, strong and loyal!!!

Below you will see instructions for setting up a fundraising page on your Facebook account that could help us more creatively (and VERY SIMPLY)  raise money for VAI.  If you would consider doing this, it would be FANTASTIC!!  Rest assured, it is safe and so easy to do!  Facebook literally does ALL the work for you once you set it up!  They send receipts & reminders automatically.  Imagine this-if just 100 of you did this and kept the $200 amount that Facebook has set as default , that would be $20,000!!!!

Here are the instructions for setting up a fundraising page:

Desktop will be the preferred method but you can create on mobile. (it is a bit more complicated on a mobile device so we recommend using a desktop)

1. Open Facebook

2. In side Menu, find & select Fundraisers

3. Click Select Nonprofit

4. Search and select Van Andel Research Institute

5. Customize amount to raise & length of fundraiser {recommend October 11}. Mobile does not allow length to be edited.

6. Add Bee Brave behind your name in fundraiser title {ex. Chris's Bee Brave Fundraiser for Can Andel Research Institute}

7. Edit Why section with recommended verbiage and personalize team info name in text

8. Edit fundraiser photo

9. Click Create

We appreciate your registration for Bee Brave 2020 so much! It is our goal to stay within all state mandates as we proceed with our planning. If, for whatever reason, our event needs to cancel or go totally virtual, we will not be offering any refunds on your registration.

We do NOT see this happening but if it does, we thank you for your donation.

We would also like to thank you for your past support and loyalty!  We could not do what we do without YOU!!!!

Bee Brave is more than just a few events throughout the year to raise money for local breast cancer research. Throughout the last twelve years, it has grown to become a community of likeminded individuals who are passionate about raising breast cancer awareness, supporting fighters, and honoring those whose battle has ended. It has become a haven of hope for those who need it, a home to share their courageous stories in, as well as a place to celebrate the victories and triumphs over breast cancer.
Bee Brave is different because 100% of the money raised stays in Grand Rapids, Michigan! But that’s not all. Bee Brave is different because:

  • 100% of our events are organized by volunteers and supported by local business sponsors who are dedicated to finding a cure.
  • 100% of race registration goes directly to breast cancer research at Van Andel Institute.

Bee Brave raised over $90,000 for breast cancer research in 2018 and that simply would not have been possible without the support of our local business sponsors and the volunteers who give countless hours to this cause. None of our incredible volunteer organizers receive a paycheck from Bee Brave because they would rather see every single dollar be used for research!
