"Thank you for being a friend", the theme song from the Golden Girls, is what always comes to mind when I think of my friends Ashley, Heidi, Katie, and Tiffany. We have been through a lot of life together and we are looking to support one another in way that will give back to a cause that means a lot to all of us. We are all mothers now and Mitochondrial Disease, specifically Leigh Syndrome took the life of our good friend Ashley's daughter, Angelina. Angelina was only on earth for 19 months, but in that time she made a powerful impact amongst her family, friends, and community. We want to spread awareness about Mitochondrial Disease and Leigh Syndrome, so maybe, just maybe there can be even more strides towards prolonging lives and even reversing the effects of this devastating disease.
My son Nico was born with 4 heart deffects (tetralogy of fallot) and a surgeon was able to go in and essentially "fix" him. Granted, he needs to go to a cardiologist every year for the rest of his life, but that is quite fortunate in comparison to the current diagnosis of Leigh syndrome. I hope with your support we can see in our own lifetimes Mitochondrial Disease cease to be a death sentence and something we can see these angels live and prosper with.
