Story

The 9/11 Promise Run & Ride, established in 2016, is an event that is  held to keep a promise that was made in 2001 when our country, the United States of America, was attacked. Many lives were lost, and we continue to deal with the aftermath. This event remembers the lives lost, and honors emergency personnel who on a daily basis respond with the greatest of courage, and our military who continue to fight for this country’s safety and freedom, here and abroad. The 9/11 Promise Run & Ride is not a race – but an event that is  held for a bigger cause. There is no winner – or second place or third place.

In 2016, a team of seven runners from different backgrounds came together and ran from the Pentagon to Ground Zero while raising over $23K all of which went to charity. During this run, they connected and formed friendships with local fire departments, police departments and community members.  They remembered, and they honored.

Each year, this event has grown in size and in fundraising totals. More individuals have signed up for the journey; more firehouses, police departments and community members have also gotten involved. To date, the event has raised over $230K all of which has gone to charity!

In 2018, the 9/11 Promise Run, Inc. became an established 501(c)(3)  non-profit organization!  As a non-profit, our fundraising mission is to provide scholarships to qualified children of first responders and military service members who have been killed or injured and are unable to hold employment.

In 2020, Run & Ride relay teams continue the journey that will begin at the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial on Wednesday, 09/09/2019.  Run Relay teams will make their trek to Ground Zero.  Taking place simultaneously, Bike Relay teams will make their trek to the United Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA.  Both events will complete their journey on Friday, September 11, 2020.   Run Teams consist of 7-10 people and will cover 240 miles.  All teams must average a 10-minute mile pace to ensure that the mileage is covered.  Bike Teams consists of self-supported teams of 2-3 people, and will cover 200 miles and 13,558'' of vertical climbing.  Firehouse aid stations will be along both the Run & Ride routes.  Lodging, dinner & breakfast will be provided by our firehouse hosts!  All athletes are required to register and commit to raising $1,000 all of which goes to the scholarships.  All support crew are also required to register; however, they are not held to the fundraising requirement (though it is certainly encouraged!).

Each athlete will experience a journey of a lifetime! This is an opportunity to remember and honor, to raise funds for children of those who have sacrificed for our communities and nation, and to grow with family and friends.

We honor the fallen and injured Heroes while we lift up their children!  #childrenofheroes

There is a nominal registration fee of $100 for the run and $125 for the bike which will help pay for the event costs. Additionally, from November 15, 2019 to October 1, 2020 each individual will commit to raising a minimum of $1000 that will go directly to the 9/11 Promise Run charity. Each athlete will be issued a GoFundMe fundraising webpage that he/she can create and provide a story as to why they are running. This webpage will allow for donors to directly donate to the charity and a live feed will show how much has been donated.
