Domestic violence is often described as falling into a hole that gets deeper and deeper every day. Whether you are sleeping in a shelter with others, alone in a darkened alley, or living out of your car, domestic violence is often defined by brutal disconnection and isolation. Tethers to family and community are often broken.
The Laurel Center’s mission is to lift individuals out of that hole. For 38 years, the Center has worked to change the story of abuse in and around our community through our emergency shelter, support programs, and outreach services. When we empower individuals to rewrite their story, something quite remarkable happens. Relationships are formed. Community is built. Lives are transformed.
Last year we sheltered 197 women and children, responded to 1,169 family violence hotline calls, counseled and provided safety planning for 741 individuals, provide court advocates for 713 cases, and help over 4,000 adults and children through our education and community outreach programs. Unfortunately, there is more to do.
We are working to expand our reach by increasing individual counseling and children’s program services, where we have significant waiting lists for services. We have designed an extended stay housing program that will allow longer shelter stays for victims of abuse, buying time to find affordable, permanent housing. Most importantly, we are creating a workforce training program that will foster skill development, allowing individuals to find employment that supports their desire for independence. We need your help to make these aspirations real.
We are launching our 2019 Year-End Campaign. Even though we helped more people than ever before, two statistics have remained constant – 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime and 1 in 6 will experience sexual assault. There are still many more we could not help because we do not have the resources to do so.
Our goal for this campaign is to raise $200,000 by December 31st. To help us meet our goal, one of our amazing donors has offered to match EVERY community donation up to $100,000.
Your gift will go further this year because of our donor match! Please help us by making a life-saving gift. Thank you for your support.
