I will be running the 2019 Boston Marathon. Running has always meant a lot to me. Throughout the years, I found it as a cathartic way to exercise physically and emotionally. A time to enjoy the fresh air and challenge myself , it is the way I choose to start many morning. It has been a lifelong goal "bucket list" wish to run a Marathon, especially Boston. Now that I am in my early 40's, I feel the time is now and I am ready to embrace this challenge.
As many of you know, last year was one in which I never thought I would endure. I heard those words, "You have Cancer". I was about to face my biggest fear and challenge yet, along side my family and friends. Diagnosed with tonsil cancer from HPV, I underwent rigorous chemotherapy and radiation treatment at Dana Farber. I am beyond grateful for the wonderful care I was given, my team of incredible doctors, and the endless encouragement/ support of my family, friends and co-workers. I feel more now than ever, I want to give back to those who may be faced with the same challenge.
I will be running with the charity, "Golf Fights Cancer", founded by a close friend and colleague (Brian Oates) whom lost a good friend to this terrible disease. Brian jokingly asked that when I was back on two feet, that he would have a bib and place waiting on his team. I found this profound and a motivation in my recovery to give back to a cause that directly benefits Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
So not only with this be a personal journey, but I will be running for those in my life who have fought or are fighting today. I am launching this campaign exactly one year from which I received news of remission....so I now embark on this new Marathon journey and I greatly appreciate your support in doing so. Please help me raise as much as we can for this cause!!
With tremendous gratitude, John
