On August 17th I will be rowing around the island Manhattan to raise money for the Village Community Boathouse. The circumnavigation is an incredably challenging and scenic 30 mile voyage and a wonderful adventure to raise money for our endevour.
For the past twelve years, I have been volunteering with VCB at Pier 40 (now I'm the president), where we build traditional wooden rowboats and take people rowing for free all over New York Harbor. All of VCB's activities and programs are free and open to the public and informed by the belief that when people get out onto the water and engage with the forces of nature, wind, current and tide they will start to care and advocate for our fragile and magnificent tidal estuary,
VCB invites the public, including youth from local public high schools and colleges, to utilize the city’s waterfront and harbor, improving people’s quality of life, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship, and establishing a spirit of collaboration in crewing or building a boat. Over the years, VCB has introduced tens of thousands of international visitors, local residents and young people to the joy of rowing on the Hudson and the other waterways that surround New York City.
Your donation in support of my Row Around Manhattan will be used to support our High School Rowing, Community Rowing, and Community Boatbuilding programs. We also need money to pay for insurance, to buy wood, and maintain our our boathouse and docks.
Non-members are welcome to join us provided they have sufficient rowing experience or join us for at least three practice rows between now and the event. Non-rowing friends, family and colleagues are encouraged to support the effort by volunteering at the event or by reserving a seat in our chase boat, skippered by the charismatic Ingo Gunther, in exchange for a suggested $250 contribution.
