Once again I’m setting out on the arduous Row Around Manhattan to raise funds for Village Community Boathouse. Last year’s row was particularly exciting, with headwinds and crazy currents, a rogue wave that swamped my gig while it was beached during a rest stop, punching a hole that had to be mended with duck tape for the remainder of the voyage, including a grueling dash down the Hudson after dark. This year we plan an early start with plenty of daylight. We’ll be joined by rowers from Gloucester, Massachusetts, as word of our circumnavigation spreads.
The funds we raise will help VCB provide free rowing and boatbuilding programs to hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds who would otherwise not have access to the waterways of New York City.VCB’s high school programs teach valuable maritime skills and provide youth with a community built on teamwork. VCB promotes environmental stewardship and a sense of maritime fellowship among all those who climb into a boat and toss an oar.
We can’t do this without friends like you. You were so generous last year that I’m setting a high goal for this year. Your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps.
